Meg Viney
Vessels for Containment
21 January - 19 February
The function and concept of the vessel is a great source of inspiration in the work by Meg Viney. Viney believes that “all living entities emerge from a vessel which has held and nurtured the gestating form from conception to emergence”. Creating sculptures from natural resources, Viney builds delicate containers with fibre, bark, twigs and obsessive stitching. These forms act as a metaphor for the physical, emotional and spiritual development of life that previously inhabited its protective walls. Viney’s research in Native American culture also informs her practice. In particular the function of the ‘kiva’, an underground dwelling which when descended represents ones transition from the physical to the spiritual world informs many of her works.
